What Is Bone Morphogenetic Protein?
Bone loss in the jaw, which can happen due to missing teeth, gum disease, or injuries, may affect whether you can get dental implants. At Corpus Christi Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Kenneth Hayes and Dr. Mance Cutbirth use advanced techniques to rebuild the jawbone. This helps improve how your mouth works, enhances your appearance, and creates a solid foundation for dental implants. One method used involves bone morphogenetic protein (BMP), which encourages your body to grow new bone naturally. While BMP is a protein found in the body, it can also be made in a lab to activate bone-building cells in the jaw.
BMP can be incorporated into procedures like sinus lifts, ridge augmentation, and tooth extractions. It also helps your body regenerate bone to support dental implants and improve overall success. If you need a tooth extraction, dental implants, or a bone graft, schedule a consultation at our Corpus Christi, TX office today to learn how BMP may help.
How Is Bone Morphogenetic Protein Used in Dentistry?
BMP is often used during jaw reconstruction and bone grafting procedures to improve outcomes and provide the support needed for dental implants. During your consultation, we will discuss the different BMP options, and together we will determine the best BMP option for your specific needs. Advanced imaging tools, such as cone-beam technology, may be used to plan your procedure and decide where in your jaw BMP should be applied.
Before your procedure begins, we will explain each step and ensure your comfort. The area will be numbed with a local anesthetic, and sedation may be offered if you feel nervous or anxious. The BMP solution is applied to a special sponge designed to dissolve within your bone. This sponge is carefully placed in the treatment area and covered with a biocompatible titanium mesh to protect the site and maintain the space for new bone growth. Once the gums are sutured, the healing process begins. Over time, your body will grow new bone, creating a solid foundation to support your future dental needs.
What can I expect after bone morphogenetic protein treatment?
After a procedure involving bone morphogenetic protein, recovery will depend on the type and extent of your oral surgery, but the focus will be on supporting proper healing and bone growth. Some swelling, discomfort, or minor bleeding may occur initially, and patients are typically given specific instructions regarding diet, activity, and oral hygiene to protect the surgical site. Over the following weeks and months, the protein works to stimulate new bone formation, which is a gradual but critical part of the healing process. Follow-up visits are often necessary to monitor progress and ensure that the area is healing as expected. Our team will review your individualized recovery plan in detail, including what to expect at each stage and how to support optimal outcomes.
What Are the Benefits of Bone Morphogenetic Protein?
BMP offers several advantages for patients undergoing jawbone reconstruction and dental implant procedures:
- Stimulates natural bone regeneration for improved jawbone health.
- Reduces the need for bone harvesting from other areas of the body.
- Shortens recovery time and enhances healing.
- Creates a strong foundation for dental implants.
- Improves overall treatment outcomes with fewer complications.
Am I A Candidate For Bone Morphogenetic Protein?
Candidates for BMP are typically individuals who require jawbone reconstruction or augmentation to support dental implants or address bone loss in the jaw. If you have missing teeth, gum disease, or have experienced a jaw injury that has resulted in bone loss, BMP could be an effective solution. During your consultation at Corpus Christi Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Hayes and Dr. Cutbirth will evaluate your oral health and determine whether BMP is the right option for your needs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can bone morphogenetic protein replace traditional bone grafts?
In many cases, bone morphogenetic protein can be used instead of autogenous (self-donated) bone grafts. This eliminates the need for a second surgical site, such as the hip or chin. It can make the procedure simpler and more comfortable.
Is there a risk of allergic reaction to bone morphogenetic protein?
Allergic reactions are extremely rare because bone morphogenetic protein is a synthetic version of a protein already found in your body. However, all medical products carry some risk. Your provider will ask about allergies and medical history to minimize concerns.
Can bone morphogenetic protein cause excessive bone growth?
In rare cases, bone morphogenetic protein can cause overgrowth if not placed correctly or in the right amount. This is why it's important to have the procedure performed by an experienced professional. Your oral surgeon will take precise steps to control bone formation.
