What is Platelet-Rich Plasma in Dentistry?
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in dentistry involves an innovative technique that uses a patient's own blood to promote healing and tissue regeneration. PRP is created by extracting a small sample of blood, processing it to concentrate the platelets, and then applying it to surgical sites or areas of tissue damage. At Corpus Christi Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Kenneth Hayes and Dr. Mance Cutbirth utilize PRP to enhance recovery, reduce inflammation, and improve outcomes for procedures like dental implants and bone grafts. This advanced approach ensures faster healing and more effective results for patients in Corpus Christi, TX, and surrounding areas.
How is Platelet-Rich Plasma Treatment Performed?
PRP treatment begins with a simple blood draw from the patient, similar to a routine blood test. The blood sample is then placed in a centrifuge, which spins at high speed to separate the platelets from other components of the blood. This concentrated platelet-rich plasma, which is rich in growth factors, is carefully collected and prepared for use. In dental procedures, PRP is applied directly to surgical sites or areas needing repair, helping to accelerate healing, reduce inflammation, and promote tissue regeneration.
What Can I Expect After Platelet-Rich Plasma?
After receiving platelet-rich plasma therapy in Corpus Christi, TX, most patients notice a smoother recovery process as the body begins using its own natural growth factors to support healing. Our team will provide detailed aftercare instructions, but in general, you can expect mild swelling or sensitivity at the treatment site that improves within a few days. As the PRP continues to work beneath the surface, it helps promote tissue repair and can enhance outcomes following procedures like bone grafting or dental implants. Maintaining good oral hygiene and attending follow-up visits allows our team to monitor your progress and ensure everything is healing as expected. Choosing PRP dental treatment can be a valuable step toward a more efficient recovery and improved overall results.
What Are the Benefits of Platelet-Rich Plasma in Dentistry?
PRP therapy in dentistry offers numerous benefits that enhance healing and improve patient outcomes. Benefits include:
- Speeds up recovery time after surgical procedures
- Reduces inflammation and discomfort
- Promotes natural tissue regeneration
- Lowers the risk of infection
- Uses the patient's own blood, making it safe and biocompatible

Am I a Candidate for Platelet-Rich Plasma?
PRP therapy may be a helpful option for patients who want to support faster healing, reduce inflammation, and improve recovery following oral or maxillofacial procedures. Because PRP uses your own concentrated platelets, it works in harmony with your natural biology and can be incorporated into tooth extractions, bone grafting, dental implant placement, or other surgical treatments to enhance tissue regeneration. During your visit, our team will review your medical history, healing patterns, and goals to determine whether PRP would meaningfully support your surgical outcome. Qualities or considerations that may mean you are a good candidate for PRP therapy include having:
- Healthy blood count levels
- No active systemic infection
- Good overall healing capacity
- Stable medical conditions
- Interest in enhanced recovery
Certain bleeding disorders, medications, or complex health conditions may affect when or how PRP can be used. We will discuss these factors in detail and recommend the safest and most effective plan. Again, our team will thoroughly assess your unique situation to determine whether PRP therapy is appropriate for your treatment.
