Do Wisdom Teeth Always Need to Be Removed?

Most people assume that all their wisdom teeth will eventually need to come out, but that's not always the case. Whether you need a wisdom tooth extraction depends on how your teeth are coming in and whether they're causing problems, such as gum irritation or jaw pain.

At Corpus Christi Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, our team can take a closer look at what's going on and help you make the right decision for your oral health. Call today to learn more about our processes and schedule a consultation in Corpus Christi, TX.

What are wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth are a set of molars that emerge in your late teens or early twenties. They are the last teeth to develop, and sometimes, there is not enough room in the jaw for them to come in properly. Although wisdom teeth can come through without any issues, they can become impacted or grow in at an angle, leading to pain, infection, or other dental problems. If this is the case, wisdom tooth extraction may be needed to prevent future issues and preserve your oral health.

Symptoms that may mean it's time for removal

Many people never experience wisdom tooth pain, which means removal may not be necessary. But if you do start to notice issues, these are the common signs that it might be time for removal:

  • Persistent wisdom tooth pain or aching in the back of your mouth
  • Gum irritation around the emerging tooth
  • Jaw pain or stiffness
  • Crowding or shifting of other teeth
  • Repeated infections in the gum tissue near the tooth

It's important to note that some wisdom teeth can affect your oral health without any obvious symptoms. An impacted tooth might push on the roots of neighboring molars, leading to damage you can't feel. Cysts or tumors can also form around an impacted tooth below the gumline. This is why regular dental check-ups, including periodic x-rays, are so important. They allow our team in Corpus Christi, TX, to monitor the position and development of your wisdom teeth and catch potential issues before they become serious.

What wisdom tooth extraction looks like

Wisdom tooth extraction is a routine procedure, and most patients find it far more manageable than they expected. First, our team will review your x-rays and walk you through what to expect. Depending on whether the tooth has fully erupted or is impacted beneath the gumline, the extraction may be straightforward or require a small incision to access and remove the tooth. Either way, you will be kept comfortable throughout the process.

Recovery typically takes a few days. Some swelling, jaw pain, and tenderness during that time are normal and usually manageable with over-the-counter medication. Sticking to soft foods, avoiding straws, keeping the area clean, and following our aftercare instructions closely will help you heal smoothly and reduce the risk of complications, like dry socket.

It was great for me,no stress because I didn't know what was happening. I am 77 years young. Very little pain in the following few days. Went for 1 week check up and everything was healing fine.
