Pre-Prosthetic Surgery in Corpus Christi, TX

What Is Pre-Prosthetic Dental Surgery?

Oral prosthetics, such as full and partial dentures, dental implants, and more, are commonly used to replace missing teeth, but they may be uncomfortable or difficult to wear if the underlying jawbone is uneven, rough, or has deteriorated. At Corpus Christi Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Kenneth Hayes and Dr. Mance Cutbirth perform pre-prosthetic surgery to reshape the upper or lower bony ridge and smooth any uneven areas following tooth extractions. This procedure may help in preparing for dental implants and dentures. To learn more about how pre-prosthetic surgery can improve your denture experience, contact our Corpus Christi, TX office to schedule a consultation with our skilled team.

How Is Pre-Prosthetic Surgery Performed?

Pre-prosthetic surgery will be customized to meet your specific needs. Dr. Hayes and Dr. Cutbirth will assess your jaw and use advanced 3D imaging to assist in planning and executing the procedure. Prior to the surgery, sedation and anesthesia options will be discussed to ensure you remain relaxed and comfortable throughout the process. The treatment may include bone and gum reduction, bone grafting, tooth extractions, or other minor oral surgical procedures. If necessary, sutures will be placed to protect the surgical sites as they heal. We will thoroughly explain each step of your treatment plan, ensuring you know exactly what to expect throughout the process.

Pre-prosthetic surgery provides several advantages that improve the fit and comfort of dentures. These benefits include:

  • Enhancing denture stability
  • Smoothing rough or uneven bone for improved comfort
  • Minimizing the risk of sores and irritation caused by dentures
  • Improving chewing and speaking functionality
  • Preparing the jawbone for long-term denture use

Am I A Candidate for Pre-Prosthetic Surgery?

Preparing for dentures or other tooth replacement options often raises questions about whether pre-prosthetic surgery is necessary. This type of care is commonly recommended when the jawbone or soft tissues could affect how comfortably a prosthetic fits or functions. You may be a candidate if you experience any of the following:

  • Uneven or sharp areas of jawbone that interfere with denture placement
  • Excess gum tissue that impacts stability or comfort
  • Bone changes related to long-term tooth loss
  • Ongoing irritation or difficulty wearing existing dentures

At Corpus Christi Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, our team evaluates each patient’s oral anatomy, health history, and restorative goals to determine whether oral surgery for dentures may be beneficial. When appropriate, treatment is designed to create a smoother, more supportive foundation, helping improve comfort, function, and long-term success through trusted oral surgery care.

Is pre-prosthetic surgery painful?

Pre-prosthetic surgery is typically performed under sedation or anesthesia, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Afterward, some mild discomfort or swelling may occur, but this can be managed with pain medication and proper aftercare. Dr. Hayes and Dr. Cutbirth will provide detailed post-operative instructions to ensure a smooth recovery.
