What Is Dental Distraction Osteogenesis?
Dental distraction osteogenesis is a surgical technique used to gradually lengthen the jawbone by stimulating new bone growth in areas where the bone is too short or underdeveloped. During oral surgery, a distraction device is used to slowly separate the bone segments, allowing new tissue to grow in the gap. This method is often used to correct jaw deficiencies and congenital deformities or to create sufficient bone structure for dental implants. At Corpus Christi Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Kenneth Hayes and Dr. Mance Cutbirth perform this advanced procedure to help patients achieve a healthier and stronger jawbone, providing a minimally invasive alternative to traditional bone grafting. How Is Distraction Osteogenesis Performed?
Distraction osteogenesis for dental implants and other surgical procedures is performed by surgically creating a controlled cut in the jawbone, thus dividing it into two segments. A specialized distraction device is attached to gradually move the bone segments apart, typically at a rate of about 1 millimeter per day. This slow and controlled separation stimulates the natural growth of new bone in the gap, increasing the bone's length and volume. Distraction osteogenesis phases include the initial surgical procedure, an active distraction phase where the device is adjusted daily, and a consolidation phase that allows the new bone to stabilize and harden. While distraction osteogenesis is often used to build sufficient bone for dental implants, it is also effective for addressing jawbone deficiencies, correcting facial asymmetry, and treating congenital deformities.
What Can I Expect After Distraction Osteogenesis?
After distraction osteogenesis, the recovery and follow-up care are crucial for a successful outcome. The consolidation phase, where the new bone hardens and stabilizes, can last for several weeks. During this time, you will have regular follow-up appointments with Dr. Hayes or Dr. Cutbirth to monitor your healing progress through imaging and clinical exams. Once the bone has fully consolidated and matured, the distraction device will be surgically removed. Patients can then proceed with any subsequent treatments, such as the placement of dental implants or further orthodontic adjustments, on a solid and stable jawbone foundation.
Am I A Candidate For Distraction Osteogenesis?
Candidates for distraction osteogenesis are typically individuals with significant jawbone deficiencies that cannot be corrected with more traditional methods. This may include patients with congenital deformities, such as a receding chin or jaw, or those who have experienced bone loss due to trauma or previous surgeries. The procedure is suitable for both adults and adolescents whose jaw growth is complete. During a consultation, Dr. Hayes or Dr. Cutbirth will assess your oral and facial structure, review your medical history, and use advanced imaging to evaluate the bone quality and quantity.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the entire distraction osteogenesis process take from start to finish?
The timeline for distraction osteogenesis varies depending on the amount of bone needed and your body’s healing response. Generally, after the initial surgery, the active distraction phase lasts one to two weeks, with the bone segments moved approximately 1 millimeter per day. Following this, the consolidation phase - where the new bone hardens and stabilizes - can take several weeks to a few months. Our surgical team will monitor your progress with follow-up appointments and imaging to ensure the bone is developing as expected before the device is removed or further procedures like dental implants are scheduled.
Is distraction osteogenesis painful during the daily adjustments?
Most patients report feeling mild pressure or discomfort during the daily adjustments rather than sharp pain. This sensation typically subsides shortly after each adjustment as the bone and surrounding tissues adapt to the gradual change. Our caring team will guide you on managing any discomfort with over-the-counter pain medication if needed and will ensure adjustments are done carefully to minimize irritation.
What are the benefits of distraction osteogenesis vs. bone grafting?
One major advantage of distraction osteogenesis is that it stimulates your own body to grow new bone, often resulting in stronger and more stable bone compared to grafting alone. It also allows for simultaneous expansion of soft tissues like gums and skin, reducing the need for additional grafts or complex reconstruction procedures. This technique can be particularly beneficial for patients with significant bone deficiencies or facial asymmetries who need more substantial corrections for functional or aesthetic reasons.
