What Is Cone Beam Computed Tomography?
Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is an advanced imaging technology used in dentistry to create detailed 3D images of the teeth, jawbone, gums, and nerve pathways. Unlike traditional x-rays, CBCT provides a more comprehensive view, allowing Dr. Kenneth Hayes and Dr. Mance Cutbirth at Corpus Christi Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery to assess the structure of the mouth with greater precision. This noninvasive procedure helps in diagnosing conditions, planning treatments (like dental implants), and evaluating the health of the jaw and surrounding tissues. With its high level of accuracy, CBCT ensures better treatment outcomes and a more personalized approach to dental care. To learn more, contact our office in Corpus Christi, TX.
What Are the Benefits of A Dental Cone Beam CT Scan?
A dental cone beam CT scan offers several key benefits that enhance diagnostic accuracy and treatment planning, including:
- Provides detailed 3D images for a comprehensive view of the teeth, bone, and surrounding structures
- Improves the precision of dental implant planning and placement
- Helps detect hidden dental issues such as tumors, infections, and fractures
- Reduces the need for multiple scans or invasive procedures
- Offers a quicker and more comfortable experience for patients compared to traditional imaging methods
Am I A Candidate For a Cone Beam CT Scan?
Anyone who requires detailed imaging for dental or oral health concerns may be a candidate for CBCT. This includes individuals who need dental implants, those with suspected jaw conditions, and patients requiring a thorough evaluation of their teeth, gums, or surrounding structures. During a consultation, Dr. Hayes and Dr. Cutbirth will determine whether CBCT is necessary for your specific needs and how it can help create a personalized treatment plan.

Had 2 teeth removed and titanium implants put in on March 24,2026.Dr. Cutbirth DDS MD put me to sleep at 8:30 am with an IV and woke me up at 9:30 am. Procedures were completed. It was great for me,no stress because I didn't know what was happening. I am 77 years young. Very little pain in the following few days. Went for 1 week check up and everything was healing fine. I would recommend Dr. Cutbirth and his staff to anyone. He explains what is going to happen during surgery, prior to your surgery, and also explains after care when you wake up . He makes the procedure less stressful.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is CBCT imaging necessary for every dental implant procedure?
While CBCT isn’t required for every case, it’s highly recommended for dental implant planning because it provides a precise 3D view of your bone structure, nerve pathways, and sinus cavities. This level of detail helps our surgeons determine the most appropriate placement and angle for each implant, assess bone density, and avoid anatomical risks, ultimately increasing the safety and success rate of your procedure.
Does a CBCT scan expose me to more radiation than a regular dental x-ray?
CBCT does use more radiation than traditional 2D dental x-rays because it captures a complete 3D image in one scan. However, the exposure is still relatively low and much less than a medical CT scan of the same area. The benefits of the detailed information gained often outweigh the minimal additional exposure, and we will only recommend CBCT when it is necessary for diagnosis or treatment planning.
Can CBCT imaging detect issues that regular dental x-rays might miss?
Yes, one of the main advantages of CBCT imaging is its ability to reveal problems that standard x-rays can’t fully capture. This includes hidden fractures, impacted teeth positions, bone defects, cysts, tumors, or complex root canal anatomy. Having this comprehensive information ensures our team can create the safest and most effective treatment plan tailored specifically to your dental and oral health needs.
