What Is Socket Preservation?
Socket preservation is a procedure performed after a tooth extraction to maintain the bone and tissue structure of the socket, preventing bone loss and ensuring a stable foundation for future dental implants. How Is Socket Preservation Performed?
Socket preservation is typically performed right after a tooth extraction to help maintain the structure of the jawbone and surrounding tissue. During the procedure, a bone graft material is placed into the empty socket to promote healing and prevent bone loss. The graft material is carefully packed into the socket to fill the space left by the removed tooth, stimulating new bone growth and helping preserve the natural contour of the area. Over time, the graft integrates with the surrounding bone, providing a stable foundation for future dental implants.
What Are the Benefits of Socket Preservation?
Socket preservation helps maintain the shape and health of the jawbone after a tooth extraction, offering several important benefits:
- Prevents bone loss in the extraction site
- Maintains the natural contours of the gums and jaw
- Provides a stable foundation for future dental implants
- Improves the chances of successful implant placement
- Preserves oral health and appearance over time

Who is a candidate for socket preservation?
Socket preservation is typically recommended at the time of tooth extraction to help maintain the shape and volume of the bone in that area. This can be especially important if future implant placement is being considered. Candidacy depends on long term treatment goals and the condition of the surrounding bone. You may be a candidate for socket preservation if your plan includes:
- Future implants
- Recent extraction
- Bone volume concerns
- Esthetic areas
- Long term planning
Patients should not have active infection that would interfere with healing. Our team will assess whether preserving the site will support better options down the line.
