Sinus Lifts in Corpus Christi, TX

In order to be a candidate for dental implants, patients need to have enough bone density and an appropriate amount of room for an implant to be placed without touching the nasal passages. If they do not meet these qualifications, a sinus lift may be performed. A sinus lift, or sinus augmentation, is a surgical procedure used to increase bone height in the upper jaw near the molars and premolars. By gently lifting the sinus membrane and placing bone graft material underneath, this procedure creates a stable foundation for dental implants when natural bone density is insufficient due to bone loss or sinus proximity. At Corpus Christi Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Kenneth Hayes and Dr. Mance Cutbirth perform sinus lift procedures to help patients qualify for dental implants and achieve secure and long-lasting dental restorations. Sinus lift surgery is performed using a specialized technique to increase bone density in the upper jaw. During the procedure, an incision is made in the gum tissue to expose the bone, and a small opening is created in the jawbone near the sinus cavity. The sinus membrane is carefully lifted, creating space for bone graft material to be placed beneath it. This graft may consist of the patient's own bone, donor material, or a synthetic substitute. The area is then sutured to heal, allowing the graft to integrate with the natural bone over several months. This process creates a stable foundation for dental implants and improves overall jaw structure.

What Are the Benefits of a Sinus Lift?

Sinus lift surgery could help increase the amount of bone in the maxilla, specifically in the area of the molars and premolars. The advantages include:

  • Lifts the sinus floor in order to diminish the risk of implant issues
  • Allows people with previously insufficient bone density an opportunity to opt for implants as a tooth replacement remedy
  • Aids in renewing full bite strength, permitting individuals to eat and chew more securely
  • Stops facial collapse or a sunken appearance affiliated with missing teeth and bone loss
  • Amplifies the durability and longevity of dental implants by supplying reasonable bone support
  • Delivers needed bone mass so dental implants can be properly placed, guaranteeing a stable base

Am I a Candidate for Sinus Lifts?

When bone height in the upper jaw is insufficient for implant placement, a sinus lift may be necessary to create proper support. Careful imaging and evaluation help determine whether this additional step is required. You may be a candidate for a sinus lift if you have:

  • Bone loss in upper jaw
  • Missing upper molars
  • Limited implant support
  • Close sinus proximity
  • Long term tooth loss

Certain sinus conditions may need to be addressed before surgery. Our team will review your scans and discuss whether a sinus lift is appropriate for your treatment plan.

Is a sinus lift procedure painful?

A sinus lift is performed under local anesthesia or sedation, so you won’t feel pain during the procedure itself. After surgery, some discomfort, swelling, or minor bleeding may occur, but these symptoms are generally mild and short-lived. Dr. Haynes and Dr. Cutbirth will provide aftercare instructions and pain management guidelines to keep you comfortable.

Can a sinus lift fail?

Though rare, a sinus lift can fail if the graft does not integrate properly with the natural bone or if an infection occurs. In such cases, Corpus Christi Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons may need to repeat the procedure to achieve the desired results. Following our post-operative instructions greatly reduces the risk of complications and improves the chances of success.

Are there any dietary restrictions after a sinus lift?

Yes, after a sinus lift in Corpus Christi, TX, you’ll need to avoid hard, crunchy, or chewy foods that could disturb the healing area. Soft foods like soups, yogurt, and mashed potatoes are recommended during the initial recovery period. Our trained team will provide detailed dietary guidelines to follow until the area fully heals.
