What Is Ridge Augmentation?
Sometimes, when a tooth is pulled, the rest of the socket and the bone surrounding it breaks or does not recover properly. This can create a deformity of the gums and/or an area of reduced density in the jaw. If this occurs, Drs. Kenneth Haynes and Mance Cutbirth can execute a ridge augmentation. Also known as horizontal or vertical alveolar ridge augmentation, this procedure utilizes bone grafts to restore the alveolar ridge, which is the area along the branches of your teeth. The augmentation process will construct the bone back to the initial height and width to prepare your mouth for an implant. A ridge augmentation might also be done for aesthetic reasons to correct the overall look of your gums. At Corpus Christi Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, a ridge augmentation may be performed with multiple bone graft options. Schedule a consultation at our Corpus Christi, TX office to learn more information about dental ridge augmentation and how it can help enhance the health of your mouth.
How Is Ridge Augmentation Performed?
Ridge augmentation can be performed as an outpatient procedure and will usually utilize IV sedation. It may be done directly after a tooth extraction or on its own. The first step is to place the graft inside the socket in the jawbone where the tooth was removed. Following that, your gums may be shaped over the graft until they are stitched closed. In certain instances, we may need to add another substance to the graft in order to create a space and height that matches the initial appearance.
What Are the Benefits of Ridge Augmentation?
Ridge augmentation provides several benefits for restoring oral health and improving dental functionality, including:
- Restores natural jaw contours
- Provides a stable foundation for implants or dentures
- Prevents further bone loss
- Enhances chewing and speaking abilities
- Improves overall oral aesthetics

Am I a Candidate for Ridge Augmentation?
After tooth loss or trauma, the jawbone can shrink or lose its natural contour. Ridge augmentation may be recommended to restore adequate bone volume before restorative treatment. You may be a candidate for ridge augmentation if you have:
- Jawbone resorption
- Irregular ridge contour
- Previous extractions
- Implant preparation needs
- Traumatic bone loss
In some cases, alternative restorative approaches may be discussed. Our team will evaluate your bone structure and determine whether ridge augmentation is necessary.
