Bone Grafting in Corpus Christi, TX

The strength of your jawbone plays a crucial role in your overall oral health. If your jawbone has been weakened by physical trauma or missing teeth, a bone graft in the mouth may be necessary to ensure it can securely hold both your natural teeth and dental implants. Bone grafting, or osseous surgery, helps rebuild and augment the jawbone to make it healthy enough to support dental implants. At Corpus Christi Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Drs. Kenneth Hayes and Mance Cutbirth perform this procedure to strengthen your jaw before implant surgery, providing a solid foundation for replacing missing or weakened teeth. Schedule an appointment at our Corpus Christi, TX office to learn more about bone graft surgery in the mouth.

The exact process of your bone graft procedure will vary based on the graft source and how much grafting is needed. Your bone graft may be taken from your own body from areas like the chin, hip, or lower leg, which is known as an autograft. Other graft sources include an allograft, which harvests bone from another human; a xenograft, which is taken from an animal (generally a cow); and an alloplast, a synthetic bone graft. During your consultative appointment, we will discuss your graft options and help you decide on the best type for your needs.

When the graft is ready to be placed, Dr. Haynes or Dr. Cutbirth will numb the needed areas and make an incision in the gum tissue to reach the bone. The bone graft will be affixed to your jawbone along with collagen and proteins that stimulate growth in the graft. The gum tissue will be closed with sutures, and the mouth will be cleaned.

Over the next six or more months, your bone graft healing process should integrate with your jaw through osseointegration, creating a stable foundation for future treatment. During this timeframe, it is important to follow a proper oral care routine with flossing and brushing, along with any additional products recommended by our team to support oral surgery recovery and bone graft healing after tooth extraction. She may prescribe antibiotics or pain medication to help manage inflammation or discomfort during your dental bone graft recovery timeline. You may also need to attend follow-up appointments at Corpus Christi Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons so our team can monitor your progress and determine when your jawbone is strong enough to support a dental implant procedure.

Bone grafting may be recommended for patients who need to rebuild bone around a compromised tooth or strengthen the foundation before restorative treatment. Our team evaluates your bone volume, oral health history, and long-term goals to determine whether grafting will support a predictable outcome. This procedure is often essential for maintaining stability and preserving natural tooth structure. Having the following may make you a good candidate for bone grafting:

  • Adequate oral hygiene
  • Healthy gum tissues
  • Localized bone loss
  • Stable systemic health
  • Clear restorative goals

Some systemic conditions, infections, or medications may influence timing or technique. We will discuss these factors openly and design a plan that prioritizes safety and long-term success. Again, our team will thoroughly assess your unique situation to determine whether bone grafting is appropriate.

Do all dental implant patients need bone grafts?

Not all patients who get dental implants will need a bone graft. One of our board-certified oral surgeons will perform a thorough evaluation and determine whether your jawbone has enough density and volume to support implants.

What happens if I don’t get a bone graft?

If you don’t get a bone graft when one is recommended, your jawbone may continue to deteriorate, leading to further bone loss, changes in facial appearance, and reduced oral function. This can also make it impossible or more complex to place dental implants in the future, potentially limiting your tooth replacement options.

Can I eat normally after a bone graft?

You will need to stick to a soft food diet for several days following the procedure. Avoid crunchy, spicy, or hot foods that may disturb the surgical site.

If you're experiencing jawbone weakness or missing teeth, a bone graft can help restore your oral health and make necessary treatments possible. Whether you require a bone graft after tooth extraction or need a bone graft for an implant, Dr. Kenneth Hayes and Dr. Mance Cutbirth at Corpus Christi Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery can provide the care you need.
